Literacy Program Grad Looks Up and Gives Back
Mirza Miletty has discovered that it’s never too late to fulfill your dreams. At age 54, she recently completed the requirements for a high school diploma through Amos House’s Literacy Program. Mirza, known as “Chickie,” is poised to further her education, while also helping others advance.
“They’ve taught me a lot I didn’t know,” said Mirza, a native of Brooklyn. “I’ll be graduating this June and I’m ecstatic about it!”
Although she dropped out of high school in 10th grade, her thirst for knowledge continued. She recalls visiting libraries to read books on blue prints in order to land a job in the field of Quality Control. At first she was successful. But at age 19, her life began to spiral downward due to binge drinking after losing her two children in a family dispute. Soon, she was addicted to alcohol. After several years passed, Mirza traveled from California to Rhode Island in search of recovery. She found it with help from Amos House. In August 2009, she entered our 90-Day Transitional Program and has lived a lifestyle of sobriety ever since.
After finishing the 90-Day program, Mirza heard about Amos House’s Literacy Program and decided to pursue a GED. “I thought maybe I can accomplish more,” she explained. “I was always scared because of my past. But here you’re kind of like on your own pace. They give you the attention that you need…It has built up my self-esteem.”
Tyla McCaffrey, Literacy Program Coordinator, described Mirza as disciplined and hard-working. “Her academic abilities have skyrocketed since she entered the program,” said Tyla. “I am constantly amazed by the amount of time she spends at home working on her school work and her commitment to excellence.”
Equally important, Mirza has reconnected with her children and is committed to helping other people. She assists students in the Literacy Program and brings in new participants. “It feels so good to be able to help someone go along,” she shared. “I feel like I’m able to give back.”
