The Senator, a retired Assistant Principal for the Providence School Department, presented each one with a Senate Citation recognizing their efforts and achievements. The occasion was Amos House’s Literacy Program Graduation and Recognition Ceremony on June 27th. Over 100 people attended the festive event at the OIC building in south Providence, where Amos House holds literacy classes.

Our Literacy Program provides adult basic education classes and tutorial assistance through which students at all levels can improve their reading, writing and math skills. The program offers resources to help adults obtain a high school diploma or GED, and pursue post-secondary education or employment.

The ceremony featured poetry reading, a musical performance, diploma and award presentations, and salutary remarks. Graduates that received a high school diploma and Senate Citation include Caitlin Brown, Gabriela Gomes, Valeris Harris, Affadella McCarthy, Mirza “Chickie” Miletty, Junior Smith, and Christine Vierra. Fifteen others were honored for increasing their educational level by one or more grades. They are Matthew Andrade, Joyce Bullock, Heather Diaz, Kimberly Fields, Antoinette Gale, Latisha Goode, Allen Gore, Christian “CJ” Hutchings, Simone Lee, Sandra Marte, Victoria Ogunbiyi, Claris Page, Yadira Rosario, Michael Rowe, and Adrianna Whitehead.

Since the Literacy Program began in 2008, 25 adults have received a high school diploma or GED, and 125 have increased their educational level. Along with program participants, we salute our literacy staff –Tyla McCaffrey, Literacy Coordinator; Zawadi Hawkins, Literacy Instructor; and Jennifer Kodis, Coordinator of Employment Services – for helping men and women fulfill their educational dreams.
