Advocacy Work
More than a meal, Amos House is a voice. Championing the rights of the poor and homeless and engaging them in advocacy work related to poverty and housing. Our residents and guests were part of the Journey Home March that brought attention to the need for more affordable housing in Rhode Island. Several residents worked as canvassers for the non-partisan voter registration campaign, Voice Your Vote. They registered over 500 new voters in south Providence, our city’s poorest community.
Amos House staff have visited legislators in Washington, DC to ask for increased funding for federal programs that help the poor. And our agency continues to serve on the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless. In fact, we were a founding member.
While advocacy is a small part of what we do, it’s another way we’re helping people help themselves. |
